Comanche
  Day 2
Day 3

Day 4
(this page)

Yesterday, Windy fell in love with Comanche, and he returned the favor. The other mares, Slingshot and Rositta, chose to hang out with Champ. Windy, who's still chasing Champ, her full brother, is a good girlfriend for Comanche since she can help me pony him around the neighborhood. So, with ponying on my mind, I carried the lightweight saddle up to the roundpen.
The picture doesn't convey how worried he got when he saw me lift the saddle on Windy. To his credit, he watches from a minimum safe distance.
Will fear conquer love? Comanche is not sure about Windy's new outfit. Has he ever seen riders? People saddling a horse?!
Goal: help him loose the fear, but keep his attention. Key concept: differentiation. How can I help him make sense of which of my body signals mean something for him, and which of my body signals should he ignore? Am I clear on when I mean to communicate with him versus just stretching for my own purposes?
Show, don't tell!
Figured I'd prepare him so he wouldn't be too surprised if I hopped on Windy. Wish all my horses would pay attention to me as intently as Comanche does right now. Or maybe he thinks I'm weird.
He's inched a bit closer to Windy than in the first pic.
"What's my girlfriend wearing?!"
A horse-eating saddle?
